If you have a question, Viren’s your man. From the critical aspects of campaign optimization, incrementality modeling and more, to whatever the team needs to make their day-to-day smooth, Viren shares his journey and growth story at Rocketship HQ.
The work at Rocketship HQ
Q1. What are 3 words that you would use to describe yourself?
Adaptable, optimistic & ambitious
Q2. What drew you to RocketShip HQ originally? How has the company changed since?
The remote culture and a willingness to give me a second chance during one of the early assignments during the hiring process really drew me to Rocketship HQ.
The company has changed a lot since then, from a small team with few processes in place to become a process-driven company with dependable, fun-loving team members. It has a remote-first culture with no micro-management, and makes consistent efforts to make a dent in the mobile app industry.
Q3. What do you like about your job?
Our team members and leaders are here to help me, instead of telling me what to do every time. Also, the ever-changing app landscape never fails to surprise me, as there is always a scope to unlearn and relearn.
Moreover, since my work is remote, I always have time for my family and feel blessed to be able to see my 2 cute daughters growing up every day in front of me.
Q4. What has been your proudest moment at RocketShip HQ?
I have come a long way since I started at Rocketship HQ 3 years back. I went from learning about the various aspects of finance to the internal podcast, to website development, the creative process, and app tracking. I started with handling the UA activity of 1 client. Fast forward to now, and I am taking care of 6 clients. It has been a great journey, with my proudest moments being whenever a client appreciates all the hard work and strategy inputs that enable them to achieve scale and growth.
Q5. What is a typical workday like for you?
I usually start by logging in to Slack, ClickUp & email to see if there is an urgent request that I can address. Once I have that sorted out, I look at the overall health of the accounts, reports that need to be shared and optimizations we can make to improve performance. From there, I proceed to focus on creative aspects by searching for new themes we can use in our creatives and learnings that we can use.
In the second half of the day, I usually work on the multiple projects that I lead and am a part of, including building an incrementality model and tool, Google Data Studio dashboards, forecasting, LTV analysis, etc.
In between, I have multiple syncs with my team members to review status reports and see if I can assist them in any way.
The best part is that I have been able to find my success in this daily routine.
Career journey
Q6. What was a key inflection/turning point in your career?
Joining Rocketship HQ changed my career for good. 3 years ago, when I was thinking of changing my career trajectory, I wasn’t entirely sure whether remote culture would be the ideal route (this was before the COVID breakdown). I had even wondered if a remote job would count as a “real” job on my resume.
I thought of giving it a try, and what a beautiful experience it has been so far! It has allowed me to grow professionally and be able to lead in an industry that is both demanding and loads of fun to work in.
Q7. Tell us about a mentor or a person who has inspired or influenced you significantly.
I do not believe in being influenced by one person alone. However, if I did have to take one name (I will say 2), I would say – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson for his belief that one should always be the hardest worker in the room, & Ratan Tata for his simplicity and down-to-earth nature.
I firmly believe in these words, “Inspiration can come to us at any time (of our life) and from many sources.”
Q8. What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Think big and never, ever accept failure. There is no such thing as a wrong path because even a wrong path will give us invaluable learnings.
Never be afraid to take chances and always be good to everyone. If you are truthful in what you do and believe, you are bound to succeed.
Behind the scenes: Who is Viren?
Q9. Tell us about your favorite travel & food spots or experiences.
Just roaming around in Central London, UK, and Stockholm, Sweden – it gave me such a sense of peace and belonging.
During backpacking in Thailand, I savored Thai rice with fried egg and basil leaves in Chiang Mai. I also absolutely love grilled chicken, shawarma, chicken momos and home-cooked mutton curry.
Q10. What do you do for fun?
I call my friends, make fun of everyone including myself, and get sloshed when we’re together (for sure)! I like to travel, dance, & play with my daughters.
Q11. What are the top 3 items on your bucket list?
I’ll name 4!
- Travel, explore and experience at least 10 more countries.
- Stay in Goa, North-East India for a couple of months.
- Go skydiving, bungee jumping, and water skiing.
- Afford a huge modern bungalow with a swimming pool and garden (with multiple guest rooms 😜 )
Q12. What is a fun fact about yourself that not many people might know?
I don’t look like it but I am an introvert, and I generally take some time to open up. I am also a national-level judo player (I strongly believe that I should have continued with the sport) and I would love to be a Bollywood celebrity! 😉
